Raiders shutout Geneseo 28-0 in opener

Jon Cappotelli leads offense with three touchdowns

This past Friday, on what was an unusually hot and steamy night at Hamilton Field and Sports Complex, Caledonia-Mumford’s new football coach, John Walther, notched the first victory of his coaching career. Absent from the sidelines was the long time Raider leader, Mike Monacelli.  In his place stood the former Dansville High School and the SUNY Brockport football star looking to continue the “Raider Football Tradition.” With the opening night victory, the reigns have officially been past. The” Walther Era” has begun.

The Raiders came out strong and aggressive to start the game with touchdowns in two of their first three possessions.  To all those in attendance it appeared to be the beginning of an easy victory.  To Geneseo’s credit, they would not fold. The combination of the humid weather, a ton of penalties, and a deep resolve by the Blue Devils, all conspired to keep the Raiders out of the end zone for the remainder of the first half.

The third quarter of the contest had potential-upset written all over the game.  Geneseo’s first second-half possession was a nearly seven-minute, 15-play drive. Momentum had definitely shifted to the Devil’s side.  Unfortunately for Geneseo, the drive stalled after their do-everything quarterback Xavier Copeland was knocked out of the contest with a leg injury. The Raiders would again seize control of the contest with a long 94-yard scoring drive of their own, early in the 4th quarter. Jon Cappotelli’s six-yard run to the right corner of the end zone at the end of the drive would give the Raiders a comfortable 21-point cushion   Junior Mike Nevenger’s 52-yard burst with under a minute left in the contest would put the exclamation point on the opening game victory.

The high number of penalties slowed the game considerably. It was tough for either team to find any consistent playing rhythm as the Devils and the Raiders combined for 24 penalties and 234 penalty yards, in the game.

Jon Cappotelli led the Raider offense with 139 rushing yards in 14 attempts. Mike Nevinger followed Cappotelli with 74-yards in seven rushing attempts. Cappotelli also scored three of the four Raider touchdowns, on runs of 3, 15 and 6 yards.  The good news on the night was the Raider defense. The Raiders were in mid-season form. Their bend don’t break defense managed to keep the potent Geneseo offense off the scoreboard for the entire game. Colin Callan and Solomon Gominiak led the stingy Raider defense as each registered 10.5 tackles with Gominiak’s 5 solo tackles leading that statistical category.

Offensively for Geneseo, Jon Ridler, who took over at quarterback in the 3rd quarter for the injured Xavier Copeland finished the game with 72-yards rushing, in 15 rushing attempts. Xavier Copeland added 61-yards in 13 rushes. Jacob Tschiderer was a standout on the Devils’ defensive side of the ball with 5 solo tackles.

On a positive note, Raiders’ Matt Hartford’s kickoffs and punts could only be described as exceptional as two of his five kickoffs landed in the end zone while the other three kicks were deep, which only allowed for short Geneseo returns. Hartford’s punts were also high boomers with a very respectful, 39-yard average.

The Raider have one week to clean up the penalties as the Letchworth Indians wait for them, next Friday up in Gainesville. The Indians will be a formidable foe, especially after being upset this past week by the Wellsville Lions. This game is important for Cal-Mum as they try to distance themselves from the Indians in the Livingston County Division II standings as well as in the Section V class-points race. These two teams have a recent history as the Indians have proven to be a thorn in the side of the Raiders. This game will go a long way in establishing control of the LCAA Division II. Let’s Go Raiders!
